This is the debate in a sentence when it comes to door-holding. Do we hold doors open for others out of genuine kindness and courtesy, or do men hold doors open for women because they feel obligated?
There's the guy who acts as though there is not even a person right behind them, so the door is shut right in a girl's face. There is the guy who is walking 10 feet behind a girl and when she reaches for the door handle, he sprints to grab it from her, running her over in the process. Then there are the ladies - the ones who don't even say thank you when someone holds the door open for them. And the ones who act helpless and stand at the door just waiting for someone to open it for them.
There needs to be a happy medium. Over the past couple days, I have witnessed people act like the four described above and it is quite humorous sometimes. On the other hand, there is a lot of rudeness involved.
Newsflash: it is not wrong to do a nice gesture for someone
MEN - When a girl gets to the door first and holds it open for you, don't just stand there waiting for her to go before you. Don't reject her polite gesture because of some idea that that would be rude...because it isn't. Pass through it and hold it open behind you so that you both can be satisfied with the feeling common courtesy.
WOMEN - say thank you! Don't mumble...look the person in the eye, smile, and say it in a pleasant voice. Also, guys are not obligated to hold the door open for us; although it is polite for them to do so, we are fully capable of doing it by ourself. So please don't make them wait on you hand and foot.
Just a little observation of mine while walking the Bethel College campus :)
