Today, is the last day of my "teen years" for tomorrow I will be turning 20. I was so excited to finally be "going into my 20s" until I thought about how awkward an age it is. Think about it, when you are 19 you are still a teenager, when you turn 21 you are a legal adult. When you turn 20...you're just in between stages, fun stuff! So, I decided to make it more exciting and share 20 things I want to do in my lifetime.
1. Graduate from college and get a job
2. Eventually have my dream job of working at a pediatric hospital
3. Have kids
4. Teach my husband to play the piano
5. Travel to London
6. Own a Liberty Jeep and a Nissan Pathfinder (which will probably not happen)
7. Teach piano lessons as a stay at home mom
8. Live in a warm climate
9. Eat a meal in the castle at Disney World with the Princesses
10. Go to a broadway show in NYC
11. Go on an Alaskan cruise
12. Vacation in St. Lucia
13. Go horseback riding out west
14. Pay for my kid's college without taking out student loans
15. Buy a motorhome and spend the cold months somewhere warm
16. Be a phlebotomist when I retire
17. Be debt free
18. Adopt
19. Go on a family missions trip
20. Make sure my family will spend eternity with me in heaven
With that said, cheers to turning 20!

Cool, Calm, & Crazy
The three stages of College Campus Character - yes I did plan for all the words to have the letter C :)
In society, every group is stereotyped...for this post we will focus on the college student.
A girl college student: pair of ugg boots, vera bradley bag, coach purse, leggings, fake tan, and blonde hair...yep, that sums up about 96% of a female college student. The other 3% of us that exist...normal, or close to it.
A guy college student: athletic gear, pants down to the ankles, bed head, baseball cap...pretty much all of them, except for the occasional ones that like to dress nice and look like they took a shower and have been up longer than 10 minutes.
These characteristics are all external, the world sees us a certain way and how they think we carry ourselves.
But how do we classify our levels of life?
Simple - cool, calm, crazy
Calm: nothing on our list to do, carefree, happy go lucky
Cool: we have work to do but it's all manageable
Crazy: when real school begins and we laugh at ourselves because we thought we knew what we were getting ourself into...haha, FALSE
but don't get me wrong, i love it! I wouldn't trade my cool, calm, crazy life for anything else :)

Rude Awakening
Today I was looking over all of my homework that I had to get done before spring break. I noticed it was all related; all about the human body and how we work.
I thought to myself, "Man, when am I gonna be done with studying all of these muscles and bones? I need a break!"
Then I realized...that's all my major is! Looks like I'm stuck with the functions of muscles and bones forever.
Sheesh, atleast I enjoy it...most of the time :)

Vegetarian I Am
I told myself I would never become a vegetarian...until today in nutrition:
1. 80% of America's beef market, 75% of our poultry market, and 40% of America's pork market is processed and injected with (unhealthy) preservatives and steroids.
2. In the above percentages, these meats may also contain bacteria (E Coli, Salmonella, etc).
3. Also, from these percentages, a good majority of the meat is unclean...meaning they were picked up from the farms caked with manure and not rinsed off when taken to the slaughter houses, which means that some of the manure has made its way into the meat we eat.
4. Food companies/factories tend to even process sick or injured animals which adds to the bacteria intake we get from meat.
5. Food companies, especially fast food restaurants, are more concerned with quantity over quality...they process meat to make more of it, preserve it to make it last longer, inject it to make it taste better, and sell it for less so that we will buy it.
For more, watch the movies 'Supersize Me' and 'Food Inc.', and read the book 'Fast Food Nation'.

Smooth Talk, Mall Walk
My major, in general, deals with health and fitness. With health and fitness comes appearance. And, unfortunately, our society pushes and pushes for us (especially women) to look a certain way; that "certain way" is not humanly possible!
A lot of this focus is placed on teens and younger people, but something that we don't necessarily think about a lot of times is how the middle-aged and elderly are affected. Just think, are we that shallow to impose a certain look on our moms, grandmas, etc? Think of all the work they do? Personally I wouldn't want to look like a model in my pencil skirt, $100 blouse, and high heels while I'm going around wiping runny noses, changing diapers, and feeding babies! I say, the more wear and tear...the more devoted you are.
Now, I'm not saying to eat whatever you want, or who cares if you are overweight, or to not take care of your appearance. I'm just saying to eat well, and look put together. Looking put together can be as simple as jeans and hair in a pony...that is not asking much. And, personally, I think you feel better! I believe that it's not what you look like, but what you have done to influence others...that is the thing that truly matters - let your walk, talk.
It doesn't take much to witness how badly society has proposed the idea of looking like a celebrity: take, for example, a lady in her thirties or forties taking a stroll through the mall. Think of all the little kiosk's that scatter the mall, the message they are sending, and their persuasion.
The first kiosk has a sign above saying, "Better than Botox."
The man stops the woman and mentions that, if she gave him a moment he could help make her wrinkles disappear.
The second kiosk offers to get rid all of her gray hair, straighten it, maybe add some extensions?
Then, at the next kiosk, their is an Asian women who kindly offers to buffer her nails, soften her cuticles, and have smooth hands.
In the center of the mall, there is a technology geek who offers her an iphone with the latest apps, or maybe just a snazzy case to hide her old phone.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?!
What happened to just letting people roam the mall, mind their own business, and buy what they want?
Simply put, we need to accept people as the way they are.
After all, they are someone's parents, role model, and they probably know a lot more than the person who is judging them.
Like I said, let your walk talk :)

It's a Snug, Snug World After All...
You think it will never happen to your family and friends. You think it only happens to other people, and then you figure out that someone you identify yourself with has purchased a Snuggie!
Yes, a Snuggie, the extra large fleece blanket with sleeves sold at high-end clothing stores such as Walgreens. Wearing a Snuggie is like wearing your robe backwards.
You wonder what went wrong with them. Is their house too cold? Do they not have enough fleece clothing to wear?
Snuggie = Frumpy...why do pretty girls wear Snuggies?!
When you ask someone why they got a Snuggie, their reply may be similar to, "Everyone has them; they're the in thing. They are so useful, it's like wearing a blanket...you never have to come out from underneath the covers."
So? If everyone started wearing Bumpits in their hair, would she do it too?
The funny thing is, when it's 30 degrees outside, these people refuse to wear a coat. Yet, inside a 64 degree room it's "freezing" so they wear the Snuggie.
To say Snuggie lovers have blanket attachment issues is putting it mildly. I will admit, I still sleep with the same blanket that I've had since I was born. So what? Atleast I don't wear it around the house!
It's like a Snuggie Revolution...
-People list the Snuggie as a religion on facebook
-Teens have Snuggie parties
-Colleges have Snuggie costume contests
In my opinion, Snuggies are becoming a big hit with younger people. However, the Snuggie TV commercial often shows middle-aged or older people frustrated and helplessly flopping around trying to get untangled from under a blanket to attempt to answer the phone across the sofa, eat popcorn and hold the TV remote. With the Snuggie, your hands are completely free!
If we as humans were ever meant to be this lethargic, we wouldn't have legs; we would have been designed to roll instead of walk.
The Snuggie is claimed as "perfect for chilly office buildings, sporting events, and cold movie theatres." So, now the Snuggie has the privilege of being able to be worn out in public?! Stacy London and Clinton Kelly would never approve. Soon, instead of Casual Friday we'll have Snuggie Friday.
Yes, we all have the freedom of choice, we can do whatever we want as long as it is legal. And I agree, owning a Snuggie is perfectly legal. However, I will not allow a Snuggie into my house...ever.

What If...
Yesterday, one of my roommates and I were discussing about how we hate when we know we have a closet and drawer full of clothes but yet "don't have anything to wear" and we got to thinking...
If Adam and Eve hadn't sinned, then we wouldn't even have to worry! Then we decided that people should stop giving Adam and Eve such a hard time...after all, someone would've sinned some time or another!
Then we came across the thought...what if only one of them sinned?
What if Eve ate the fruit, but Adam resisted temptation and didn't?
Would men be perfect and women sinful?
Just think, if there was no sin, "our eyes would still not be opened", and there would be no need for clothes.
Think of all the time, energy, and money that could've been saved!
We wouldn't waste time picking out outfits to wear,
We wouldn't waste all that money on clothes,
etc, etc, etc
Clothes are a VITAL part of society obviously.
So, we came to the conclusion, if only Eve sinned, either God would destroy her and make a new Eve; or the flood would've happened then and Adam would be the one making the ark.
Yes, random wise thought of the day :)

There IS Light at the End of the Tunnel!
There are days when I just want to give up. My alarm goes off at 7:20 and I am supposed to be sitting in class, fully aware and learning at 8 am. Most days, I can muster up the enthusiasm to do just that. But yesterday was a different story. Sometimes, class is just hard! You think you are on top of everything and yet something happens and you are back to the place where you have no clue what is going on.
Sometimes when I have school work coming out of my ears and hard class projects I tend to forget about the big picture. Instead, I just laugh at myself and ask if I truly know what I'm getting myself into.
Today, I decided to answer that question by, yes, I know 100% what I am doing.
What I am studying for will help change kids lives...forever. Whether I like it now or not it doesn't matter. And to help keep me going, I even have living proof!
In the picture above, all you may see is a little autistic boy with down syndrome. Well, his name is Ben, and there is a lot more behind that picture. Why is one of his socks off? To help his fear of texture; he has to take his sock off every therapy session. Yes, he HAS to; he hates it! He gets to put his foot in paint and get a foot massage from a toy racecar, but he hates it. Also, it is AMAZING that he is not being held by his mother; he used to SCREAM when anyone else even looked at him. Well, that is because he has separation anxiety. Right now anyways; soon hopefully, he will be like all other boys and love to play with toy race cars, roll around in the dirt, and go to school without mommy by his side.

This little boy, Roberto, is quite a character :) He is one of the most joyful little persons I have ever met. He has a sensory disorder which prevents him from feeling pain. You may think he has the best deal yet! However, because he cannot feel pain he thinks he is invincible; he can walk around for a week with a broken foot before someone finds out. He can touch a hot stove and not feel a burning sensation. He is never hungry so has to be fed by a feeding tube.
What do these two boys have in common? They love life. And two years from now I can be one of the people that makes their lives enjoyable.
Need I ask for anymore motivation?
I think not.

Maxim Monday
"If you do what you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life."
I LOVE this quote. My advisor told us this, when he first met with all of the Exercise Science majors at the beginning of the year. In other words, if you can't see doing what your major offers for the rest of your life...change it!
For us students, our job right now is mainly going to class. Now, I know we don't wake up every morning for an 8 am class jumping for joy. But, do we sit in our classes eager to learn hoping we become the best in our field? We should!
When we have a job...when we start our careers, do we look forward to making a difference in others lives? Encouraging others throughout the day? Setting a Christlike example and striving to be a witness for Him? Or are we selfish? Full of complaints? Grumpy when things don't go our way? This is something to consider.
So my question for you, dear reader, are you doing what you love? If not, change that! We all know that in college you change your major atleast 4 times before you settle. There is always time for change and improvement.
Today is the day you can make that change.

What is Love?
Happy Valentine's Day!
If you had to describe this day to someone how would you do it?
It's a day with us ladies at the center? We wake up to find chocolate and flowers. Maybe, if we're lucky an array of diamonds in some form or another. We go out to a nice fancy restaurant.
Why do we get all of this one may ask? It's because when one thinks of girls, these are just some of the things that come to mind. Well, women don't like Valentine's Day solely for this reason although those things are much needed :)
This is a special day set aside for ladies to simply be assured that they indeed are special and cherished.
But what do all the gifts have to do with making sure we feel wanted?
Simply because showing love is harder than buying things and scheduling activities to express one's love.
How do you "show" love. It's hard, and most people don't know how, hence all the delicious chocolate, beautiful flowers, sparkling diamonds, and fancy dinners.
Another question....what is TRUE love?
Only God can portray a perfect, flawless love. This kind of love, true love, is what everyone longs for. We know it exists because we hear about it. The downfall, we don't know what it takes to express it. So we settle, for possessions that symbolize how much we care for that special person.
So how do WE portray love the way God has portrayed it to us? Simply, by commitment and sacrifice.
What? Commitment? Sacrifice? Are those words even in the dictionary now-a-days?
Unfortunately, America does not do a very good job at protraying such qualities...in the right way that is; our priorities are all out of wack.
Sure, America is committed and sacrificial: We commit 30 minutes on Thursday nights to The Office, we sacrifice and facebook fast for a week.
So what? Is that TRUE commitment and sacrifice?
In a selfish way, yes. But that is contradicting because commitment and sacrifice should be a humbling act in serving others and denying self.
Now, I am not bashing America. We are not that vain. Our soldiers and leaders are the most committed people we know; they would lay down their lives for our country. People in ministry wake up daily with the mindset to further God's Kingdom, not theirs. Medical personnel go to work determined to make people better and save lives. Teachers go to their prospective schools to love and teach their students in order to give them a future. Lawyers work hours upon hours for the betterment of their clients; to proclaim them not guilty. Mothers wake up and tend to their family; sunrise to sundown.
We are considerate, loving people for the most part.
But we are not perfect. God is, and He can help us love in a way that will make this world a better place if we are willing to surrender our lives to His kind of love.
LOYALTY
OBEDIENCE
VULNERABILITY
ENCOURAGING
Are we loyal to our family, friends, coworkers, etc.?
Do we obey God right away every time He asks us to do something?
Are we vulnerable to our mistakes, take criticism well, and look to change in order to become more like Christ?
Are we encouraging to others or are we complaining and always wishing for better?
What do these characteristics have to do with love?
What do they not have to do with love?
I believe that if we practice such things that not just Valentine's Day but EVERY day will be better!

Thankful Thursday
There are a million things to be thankful for, but today there was specifically one thing that made me happy. It's something we take for granted, until we go without it:
the SUN.
Yes, despite the however many of inches of snow we have and the 20 degree weather...the sun decided to make an appearance. I have decided that the sun makes every bad thing about the weather a little more bearable even though it still isn't warm.
So that, dear readers, is one of God's gifts to me today...the sun!

Hold Your Horses!
This is my conversation with myself throughout the day:
When my alarm went off - "I can't WAIT for the weekend!"
Doing homework this morning - "I can't wait for lunch."
Walking to lab - "I can't wait until there's no more snow."
During lab - "I can't wait until lab is over."
Walking back from lab - "I can't wait until summer."
Doing homework - "I can't wait for dinner."
After dinner - "I can't wait until my homework is done."
Doing homework - "I can't wait until tomorrow is over."
"I can't wait until this week is over, this semester, college, I just want to have a job and that's it! THEN, life will be perfect!"
HA! Am I fooling myself? Now, don't get me wrong, I love school...I love all my friends, my classes, etc but my eyes are constantly looking ahead. When was the last time I simply sat back and enjoyed the moment? Also, why am I thinking that my life after college will be easier because I know it definitely will not! I guess today was just one of those days that I had to tell my self to cool it, sit back and relax, and enjoy every aspect of life :)

Eavesdropping
On a college campus, you always have a handful (or a little over a handful) of "weird couples". You know, the kind that think they're conjoined twins? Well, I try my hardest to steer clear of those people and try not to listen in to their conversations. BUT, today as I was walking back from class there was a boy and a girl walking right behind me having a casual conversation:
The guy said something that I couldn't make out...
The girl replied, "I have a boyfriend."
Then the guy said, "Well, I have two goldfish."
What??
I will definitely be eavesdropping in on all conversations on my way to my 8 am class if this is the kinda stuff I'm missing!

"The attitude of a leader inevitably becomes the attitude of those he leads."
This quote is short, yet so full; everyone can relate which I like. We all have attitude, whether it be good or bad. And that attitude affects the people we come in contact with everyday. We all have the potential of leadership; we can either abuse it or use it to its fullest advantage. Most of us, like being in charge. If you are like me, you have a perfect solution to every problem and every task has a perfect way to go about completing it...your way. When I am given a leadership position, I find myself solely focusing on getting the job done, making sure everyone is doing their part, and make sure they all still like me by the end.
When was the last time I solely focused on my attitude?
After all, whatever my attitude is, it is bound to be the same attitude of my group members. When I think to myself, "Man, why are they so cranky?" am I usually happy go lucky? Eh, probably not. If I focus on having a positive outlook, chances are, it will rub off on others and together we can create a more positive atmosphere and probably get more accomplished and definitely enjoy ourselves better.
So my conclusion: BE HAPPY!

Hello!
As some of you may know, this is not my first blog. I started a blog last school year, but by the time summer time rolled around my schedule actually got busier and unless I got up at 5:45 to blog or stayed up late to write, it was not going to get done. Well, since I value my sleep...a lot, blogging went out the window unfortunately. So, I started to pick it up again and hopefully make it a long-term deal. I like writing, I like reading others posts as well; it's relaxing and I need that, so therefore I will do it :)
A couple things...on Mondays I will have something called "Maxim Mondays". In the dictionary, 'maxim' means an expression of a general truth or principle. I am currently a college student and my day consists of TONS of reading. However, I look forward each day to doing my devotions and reading an inspirational, good and strong Christian book as well. On Mondays, I will share what I have been reading and what has stuck out to me.
One thing that I struggle with is always being thankful; I am trying really hard to learn that everything happens for a reason and to just be happy about it. And not just be happy, but also thank God for everything He has done. So, Thursdays will be known as "Thankful Thursdays". I will share something that I am thankful for and feel free to share as well!
Also, this school year, I have seen myself really grow spiritually. I find new things about God and His Word that I never have in my 13 years of being a Christian. "Scripture Sunday" I will reflect on what God has been teaching me and hopefully be an encouragement to you too.
Thanks for following, and hopefully you will be able to read something new here every couple days. If not, feel free to remind me that I am slacking!
