My major, in general, deals with health and fitness. With health and fitness comes appearance. And, unfortunately, our society pushes and pushes for us (especially women) to look a certain way; that "certain way" is not humanly possible!
A lot of this focus is placed on teens and younger people, but something that we don't necessarily think about a lot of times is how the middle-aged and elderly are affected. Just think, are we that shallow to impose a certain look on our moms, grandmas, etc? Think of all the work they do? Personally I wouldn't want to look like a model in my pencil skirt, $100 blouse, and high heels while I'm going around wiping runny noses, changing diapers, and feeding babies! I say, the more wear and tear...the more devoted you are.
Now, I'm not saying to eat whatever you want, or who cares if you are overweight, or to not take care of your appearance. I'm just saying to eat well, and look put together. Looking put together can be as simple as jeans and hair in a pony...that is not asking much. And, personally, I think you feel better! I believe that it's not what you look like, but what you have done to influence others...that is the thing that truly matters - let your walk, talk.
It doesn't take much to witness how badly society has proposed the idea of looking like a celebrity: take, for example, a lady in her thirties or forties taking a stroll through the mall. Think of all the little kiosk's that scatter the mall, the message they are sending, and their persuasion.
The first kiosk has a sign above saying, "Better than Botox."
The man stops the woman and mentions that, if she gave him a moment he could help make her wrinkles disappear.
The second kiosk offers to get rid all of her gray hair, straighten it, maybe add some extensions?
Then, at the next kiosk, their is an Asian women who kindly offers to buffer her nails, soften her cuticles, and have smooth hands.
In the center of the mall, there is a technology geek who offers her an iphone with the latest apps, or maybe just a snazzy case to hide her old phone.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?!
What happened to just letting people roam the mall, mind their own business, and buy what they want?
Simply put, we need to accept people as the way they are.
After all, they are someone's parents, role model, and they probably know a lot more than the person who is judging them.
Like I said, let your walk talk :)
